Starting a compost pile in winter is a great way to reduce waste and enrich your garden soil, even in colder months. Although the decomposition process slows down in low temperatures, winter composting is still possible and beneficial.
By creating a well-insulated pile, layering materials correctly, and adding enough nitrogen-rich “green” materials to balance the carbon-heavy “browns,” you can maintain a compost system that will break down gradually over the season. Winter composting allows you to continue recycling kitchen scraps and yard waste, keeping the pile active until warmer weather accelerates the breakdown process in spring. Creating a compost pile begins with choosing the right location and preparing materials to encourage efficient decomposition.
