Ways to safeguard your garage from unwanted guests
Most modern homes are built with a few updated conveniences that are handy and can simplify daily routines, but how secure are they? If you have an automatic garage door then you likely have a clicker that is stored in your vehicle. If you leave your vehicle unlocked the problem is obvious, there is instant access to your garage and possibly your home. There is something else that you might not consider though.
If you are out shopping and leave your vehicle open or it is broken into this leaves your clicker open to theft. If a person gets access to your car interior, they also have access to your registration information, now they know the address that the clicker belongs to.
There are a few ways to safeguard against this. There are small keychain garage openers that are readily available and small enough to carry around with you. Most newer garage openers also offer an app for your phone that can be used to access the door. You can also install a wall remote opener that uses a typed code to open if you need to grant other people access
Another common gap in garage security is the manual pull cord. Would be thieves will use a piece of wire from the outside of the door to hook the rope inside the garage that releases the door from the track. After releasing the track they simply lift the door to gain access. To prevent this there are metal “shields” that can be installed to block access.
To further safeguard the garage, consider adding motion sensing security lights. The lights coming on can scare off intruders as they want to stay in the shadows and having a light can alert neighbors drawing unwanted attention.
